About The Melonheads

The Melonheads are passionate football fans who really love their team “The Los Angeles Rams”.
It all started back in 1983 at Anaheim Stadium when Lance Goldberg thought the fans were just a
little too reserved. He figured by putting a watermelon on his head, he would show the other fans
that it’s okay to get loose, have fun, yell and cheer very loud for your team. You can read
more on the history of the Melonheads below.

The Melonheads are not a club or anything like that. We’re just a bunch of fun guys and gals who
like to make people laugh and have a good time! Anyone can be a Melonhead; all that’s required
is to wear a watermelon on your head two different times, at two different
games and you’ll become an official Melonhead !!

The whole idea of the foam watermelon hat came about when the Rams came back to SoCal after 21
years in St Louis. We noticed the watermelon selection has changed since the days back at
Anaheim Stadium. There are two basic kinds of watermelons…. 4031’s are the larger black seeded
watermelons, and the 4032’s, are much more round and are seedless. Some of the original
Melonhead members still prefer to wear very large watermelons . "Pat Miller" still holds the
record at 53lbs. It’s currently very hard to find very large watermelons, and it’s extremely
hard to find any large watermelons during the last months of the football season.
As we all know, watermelons are a seasonal fruit. We tried thinking of ways to save our
watermelons after they were carved out. We tried freezing them, varnishing them, and even
burying them in the ground, but nothing seemed to work. Consequently, Lance Goldberg came up
with the idea to make foam watermelons. The new foam watermelon hat allows the “Original
Melonheads” to wear something large enough for them to be proud of !! And now, so can YOU !!

Lance Goldberg buys tickets in the parking lot before every game. He sits way up high in the upper sections, trying to "pump up the crowd" by wearing a watermelon on his head !! A lonely existence.

1985 - The “MELON PATCH” is Born

Lance, David Stanley (Max's dad), and Dave Nelson purchase season seats next to the tunnel so they can be close to the players running onto the field so they can "pump up the players" AND "pump up the crowd" simultaneously!! Lance is no longer a one-man band.
